Plastic Bag Free Bacchus Marsh Project

 

What is it?

An environmental initiative which aims to reduce the number of plastic shopping bags used by Bacchus Marsh residents. 

A Bacchus Marsh branded hemp bag is sold at participating retailers and schools   All profit has been returned to the participating primary schools to be used on environmental projects.

This campaign also encourages consumers to use their existing plastic bag alternatives, in addition to our eco bag.

Who was involved?

  • Bacchus Marsh Community Unlimited is a group comprising of local residents who aim to provide representation for the community, reflecting community aspirations. 
  • 8 primary schools provided the artwork for the bag; they are Darley, Bacchus Marsh, St. Bernards, Coimadai, Pentland, Balliang East, Myrniong, and Bacchus Marsh Grammar.
  • Foodworks  continue to  sell  the bags.
  • The Traders Association and some participating member retailers have sold the bags.
  • The Moorabool Shire awarded the project a $5,000 community grant.
  • The Department of Sustainability and Environment and the Vision for Werribee Plains awarded the project $5,000.                                                                                                                             
  • Maddingley Brown Coal have provided funding to support the project.
  • Moorabool Environmental Group promotion of the project.


What are the aims?

  • To reduce and eventually eliminate the use of plastic shopping bags in Bacchus Marsh.
  • Encourage customers to use plastic bag alternatives, not just our Hemp bag, but all kinds of plastic bag alternatives.
  • Educate and encourage the future generation of Bacchus Marsh about the environment.

When is it?

Plastic Bag Free for Bacchus Marsh  launched at Moorafest on  November 15th 2009, Moorabool Shire’s Environmental and Sustainability festival  held at Ecolinc.
